What excites you the most about working at beehiiv?

Thanks for exploring my newsletter more. A lot of aspects of beehiiv excite me. Still, the simplest way to explain it is just how lean and educated all the operational decisions appear to be and how their impact is calculated.

What excites you the most about working at beehiiv?

A company that was founded in the 2020s

Bear with me; this will make sense in just a minute. Believe it or not, how fresh a company beehiiv it is one of its greatest strengths. There is a distinct reason I did not say a 21st-century company but instead a 2020s company. Despite that being wrong to type out, it feels right.

Fresh Feel 💻️

The company beehiiv was built with a mindset of adapting to the changing landscape of work-life balance. All the combined effort has ensured that the employees have a voice and feel impactful.

At first glance, this makes sense as the team supports a fully remote team, and 30% are international, which is built into the company’s culture, unlike some companies slowly reinstating a hybrid working model.

Regardless of the talent pool being widely expanded upon or the 330 hours the average American spends commuting yearly.

After taking the Clifton Strengths test, my top strength was: Learner. When looking for jobs, one of the most critical questions is, “Are there opportunities for me to grow within that company?”

That could be progressing to a more leadership-based role or having the opportunity to work on various projects at the particular company, which led me to the start-up scene.

I am hungry and eager to use my disciplined mindset for a cause I agree with.

Monthly Wellness Day ❤️‍🩹

I am personally a sucker for all of those marketing buzzwords such as "Innovative," "Revoluntary," and "Revolutionize." Every once in a while, I rewatch The TechCrunch Disrupt competition scene from Silicon Valley.

After watching that episode, I realized that many innovative 20th- and 21st-century companies are "revolutionizing the world." However, I have found that many are still using outdated methodologies in their workplaces or are scared to push the boundaries of their products and services because they fear their weakening grip on their team of employees.

After hearing that Cisco was awarded the best company to work for in 2021, I attended a web seminar hosted by Cisco employees about what it was like to work there. I distinctly remember being impressed and almost shocked when I learned employees get their birthdays off.

After hearing that, I began researching the benefits of this mental health day or the occasional day off. That is when I stumbled upon this statistic.

"Depression reduces productivity by 11.5 days every 3 months and causes performance impairment for 1 to 2 hours of each 8-hour shift. Depressed workers miss about five days of work every three months."

Initially, I could imagine the level of disconnect that some of these 21st-century companies have when they hear companies like Cisco offering an extra day off for their birthday. I can’t wait for them to listen to what beehiiv offers their employees.

To me, this shows how out of touch these key decision-makers are with reality; they are so locked in their traditional mindset that they are scared to leave their comfort zone.

They would strongly oppose the monthly mental health day that beehiiv offers. Their narrow scope limits them until you take a step backward and see how much mental health impacts the employees.

Mental health is significantly reducing productivity, about 34 working days a year, equating to a 13.5% decrease.

I am going to circle back to the Cisco birthday day off.

I feel the need to reiterate that when I heard about Cisco offering birthday off, it felt like another language to me. Two of my close friends recently got jobs requiring total office attendance (unless they feel unwell, they can work from home—now, that is a revolutionary thought) and receive ten days of PTO a year.

After seeing the limitations placed on them, I wanted to have more flexibility in my life. I want to love and feel empowered at my job; however, I want to ensure the confines of the job do not restrict my life outside of work.

Book Budget 📚️

At the halfway point of 2021, I decided to make half a New Year’s resolution to become a reader. For some context, the last time that I read a book fully for fun was about three years prior, but there were two marketing books that I read for class projects that I very much enjoyed.

Those two books helped me escape the dangerous mindset of saying, “I am just not a reader.” As I found it hard to sit down and just read.

It all started with "Ready Player One" by Ernest Cline, which made me a reader. It revitalized my passion for reading, and now I love science fiction, business, and self-help books. By the end, I had a Notion database for my bookshelf that recorded six books during that half-year span.

Companies like to say they support their employees' growth and development, but that is another buzzword they want to use.

However, when I read that beehiiv has an unlimited book budget for their employees, it struck a positive nerve in my stomach.

Instead of saying that the company has "plenty of growth opportunities," this one is clear and transparent: they want the employees to feel encouraged to have their minds wander and grow by the knowledge that books provide.

The Level of Transparency 🪞

This clear descriptor aligns with the Beehive mission among the employees. Each employee can view the essential business information, enabling a clear sense of the company's progress.

This, combined with equity inclusion, empowers the team to strive for productivity, as they can physically see the number tick up or down when reviewing the quarterly reports.

It’s a constant reminder to each employee at beehiiv that they directly impact the world by taking ownership of their work.

Now, that is something that I would love to be a part of.

Thank you for taking the time to read, and I look forward to connecting with you soon!
Here’s to making the world a better place.
